This is our first true coastal walk,
departing from the typically picturesque
fishing village of Garlieston. From there
we head south along a distinct coastal
path and rising gently to the clifftops
for the journey to Cruggleton Castle.
On the return leg we divert through the
beautiful Galloway House Gardens before
returning to Garlieston to be uplifted
for the return bus transfer to Kirroughtree.
We follow the signs for the seashore
which take us along an open path with
fine views into Wigtown Bay. The structure
we see in the bay is what remains of a
prefabricated 'Mulberry Harbour', which
was tested here prior to being used by
the Allied Armies at the D-Day landings
in Normandy during World War Two.
We continue south towards Cruggleton
Castle as the path meanders and climbs
through a delightful strip of mixed hardwoods
with a carpet of dog's mercury, garlic,
bluebells and campions punctuated by patches
of primroses. After rounding Sliddery
Point our route takes on a magical feel
passing through twisted and gnarled oaks,
beech and ash before reaching a run-down
lodge beside a high boundary wall. We
pass through some old iron gates and onto
what now opens out as a cliff path. The
solitary arch of Cruggleton Castle is
our target ahead.
We will spend some time savouring the
views from the castle; on a clear day
we should be able to see the Isle of Man
whilst the tempting peaks of the Lake
District will seem surprisingly close.
We return via the same route, this time
savouring views towards the Solway Hills
until we reach Galloway House Gardens.
We will take time to explore the labyrinth
of pathways and specimen trees before
making our way back to the village by
a different route throught the gardens
themselves.
We will be picked up by bus and returned
to Kirroughtree. If we time it right we
should have time for a quick liquid refreshment
in the Hrbour Inn before we leave.
NOTE - Walkers may opt to join this walk
from Garlieston and not use our bus transfer.
This is perfectly acceptable and you should
park your car in the car park across from
the village hall adjacent to the caravan
park.
